The country’s volcanic landscape and rugged coastline make for breathtaking scenery. But there’s more to Iceland than that – the Snaefellsnes Peninsula, for example, is a must-see destination for travelers with its scenic Kirkjufell mountain and Kirkjufellsfoss waterfall. Here you can also photograph a lava tube, see bird nesting colonies along dramatic coastal cliffs, and drive out to remote lighthouses.

If you’re going to see one waterfall in Iceland must see, make it this one. Seljalandsfoss is unique among Icelandic waterfalls because you can walk behind the cascading water here (though it’s closed during the winter when it turns into an ice skating rink).

For something different, check out the Hverir geothermal area on the southern coast. This hot springs and mud pool park is home to bubbling mud pools, steaming fumaroles, and erupting geysers. There are also a few trails here where you can hike up to the edge of a canyon for views down to the waterfall.

Thingvellir National Park is another must-see attraction on the Golden Circle. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site because it’s where you can see the gap between the North American and European tectonic plates. Here you can also find the less-well-known Oxararfoss waterfall, as well as the famous Gullfoss waterfall and Geysir geothermal area.
