Marathon Des Sables
Dubbed ‘the toughest footrace on earth’, this multiday ultramarathon sees runners take part in a 6-day trek across the Sahara Desert in Morocco. Runners have to carry their own supplies throughout the entire event and sleep in communal tents each night. The terrain is harsh with dunes of hot white sand and temperatures that can reach 50 degrees Celsius at midday, so you’ll need a serious amount of grit to get through this one!
Antarctic Ice Marathon
What makes this grueling marathon so difficult is the arctic conditions. Unlike your typical road or trail marathon, the Antarctic Ice Marathon is a true wilderness run with only musk oxen and arctic foxes as companions. The icy terrain is a challenging challenge that requires precise footing and the ability to cope with extreme weather on the ice sheet.
The Great Wall Marathon
A marathon with the word ‘Everest’ in its name is bound to be tough, but this particular event is also one of the most beautiful. Set in the ‘Big Five’ game reserve of Africa, participants will have the chance to run among elephants, rhinos, buffaloes and lions while taking in stunning landscapes and views on this one of the most scenic marathons around.
